COMPOSITION
1- arrange a table still-life at home.
2- Divide one 18 x 24 inch newsprint paper into 12 equal sections.
3- Use a 2 x 2 inch slide mount to view sections of still-life and draw on newsprint, 12 different 3 minute compositions.
4- Select one of twelve studies and enlarge on white paper applying techniques and concepts discussed in class to date.
5- Review definitions of Principles of design and be prepared to discuss final drawing in critique.
Due 3/09/09
1- Read pp 69 - 86
2- Complete exercise "White on Black, Gray Too," using a "stiil-life" made from organic objects. Spend at least 5 hours working on this drawing.
3- Continue drawing from observation in your sketchbooks.
Due 3/16/09 In sketchbook draw multiple quick gesture drawings while watching people walk, sit, play, work, rest. Due 3/30/09 1- In your sketchbook, draw 12 gesture and 12 contour studies of self-portaits. Make faces and change angles for each one (looking up, down, 3/4 right turn, left turn, smiling frowning, etc.) Hold each pose for 1 minute. 2- Refering to Self-portrait by Degas on p. 77 of your textbook, draw a double self portrait positioning a second mirror next to you. Use
medium of charcoal and technique of modeling as well as subtractive technique with kneaded eraser to bring back light. Spend at least three hours on portrait but not necessarily all at once. Take breaks to step back from work.
Due 4/06/09
Complete in class "Surreal" self-portrait drawing .
Due 4/13/09 Complete sketches made in class from memory focusing on value contrast, and spatial relationships. Due 4/20/09
Read pp 113 - 124
Create an automatic drawing by starting at one corner of an 18 x 24 " white paper and begin filling outward using a bamboo pen and ink. Draw lines and shapes as if you were simply doodling while talking on a phone. Let your lines and shapes overlap until the entire surface of the paper has been marked over. Then use a brush with water diluted ink washes in an automatic manner over your pen drawing. Spend 2-3 hours on this assignment.
Due 4/27/09
Draw the same outdoor scene three times (Morning, noon, late afternoon/early evening) capturing the differences in light, and dark values as well as direction of shadows while incorporating linear perspective.

Draw (with color pastels) the same outdoor scene three times (Morning, noon, late afternoon/early evening) capturing the differences in light, shadow, color while incorporating linear perspective.

Examine John MacTaggart's Geometric Abstraction titled "Rainbox," and scroll down for the variations. Notice that these samples are using a basic one point perspective to achieve the illusion of depth. On your own, with a pencil draw a one point perspective and substitute the squares for another shape or pattern. Organize these shapes or patterns in a different order. With acrylic paint or gouache create a complimentary color composition including your own overriding lines, shapes, or textures such as in the Development 3 example. Be playful yet mindful of your total composition as an optical illusion.
