Daughter of Athena: homage to Angela Paterakis
"My Painted Lyre: Seeing Music in Greektown Chicago. I am painting this fiberglass “Lyre” sculpture to be outdoors with other artists painting similar forms in Greektown for this summer of 2022.
I am using this opportunity to once again celebrate my former teacher from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Professor Angela Paterakis 1932-2013.
Angela left this world in 2013, but not before I got to thank her on stage in front of my art educator comrades when I was honored as the Oppy Teacher of the year by the Oppenheimer Family Foundation. Angela nurtured many of us artists to become embedded throughout the Chicago Public Schools and beyond. She did so much more than that but we knew her as our SAIC “2nd mom” or Grand Mom, depending on which decade she mentered you. Angela continued to be invested in her students’ careers long after they graduated, frequently connecting them to professional opportuities. Angela Paterakis created an educational network of educators and professionals that promoted the arts in early education and equitable opportunities for inner city kids through the numerous individuals and organizations she collaborated and partnered with."
